Elderly Dog Passing Toxic Gas ! Help !

We have two rescue dogs and one of them (an elderly lady Cocker) passes the most foul of gas all day. I know someone who used to give their dog "Beano" in the USA which stopped the gas. I know this is available in the USA but cant find it anywhere else.

Anyone know if it is available in Europe ? I have ordered some from a US seller on Ebay meanwhile. The active ingredient is natural, being alpha-galactosidase enzyme 300 GALU? (derived from Aspergillus niger).

I have at least six air fresheners in the living room where she tends to sleep but they are no help at all. It really is enough to make your eyes water and quite a good aid for my diet too !

I will ask at the Vets next time we go but wondered if anyone knows about this ?

Thanks

Mrs Sultana

PS She eats 'croquettes' with addition of tidbits and bits left from the table.

Until your stuff from the USA arrives, you could try adding some natural yoghurt to the food and if you can find charcoal tablets in the local health food shop give them 2 - 4 tablets of these a day. However, if it continues then pop him to the vet as it may be a bacterial gastric problem and needs treating.

Great info chacka, thank you so much. I will indeed try to get the charcoal stuff in the meantime. She has just been to the vets but only for a general once over.

She raised merry hell, so next time I am thinking of slipping her half a Xanax....................

HI Mrs S,

Has she always been like it? If not it is often a change of diet that causes this. You can give charcoal etc and this may damp it down, but it is better to address the cause, which is generally a diet that doesn't suit them. Some of the specialist foods on the market for senior dogs are lighter in fats but there are also supermarket versions available at a more sensible price. The natural yoghurt may help too although if she is already having dairy it maybe the problem as a surprising high number of dogs are lactose intolerant. If she gulps her food greedily you can spread it around on the floor so she has to search for it instead of being able to gulp which will limit the amount of air she gulps down too which may help. Some people have found that their dogs are worse after eating raw hide chews. If you ar4e feeding complete food (kibble) it is certainly worth looking at the ingresients and then changing to a different formua. I have heard the Cockers are a bit prone to gas!

best of luck
